Miss China won Miss World 2007 in Sanya, China, yesterday, much to the delight of a partisan audience. Miss Angola came second and Miss Mexico third at the beauty pageant, held on the southern holiday island of Hainan. Two billion people in 200 countries were expected to tune in to watch the show, which saw Miss China take the crown ahead of 106 of the world's most beautiful and talented women. The 57th edition of the contest was held on World AIDS Day as organisers wanted the annual showcase of gloss and glitz, seen by critics as a sexist throwback, to help increase awareness of the fight against HIV/AIDS. Hometown fans were cheering on Miss China -- Zhang Zi Lin, a 23-year-old secretary from Beijing -- hoping she could live up to her billing as one of the pre-contest favourites and bring home the crown and she sure did. But Ada Aimee De La Cruz of the Dominican Republic was also hotly tipped by British bookmakers as the biggest threat among the 106 contestants. To underline their commitment to AIDS awareness, organisers had invited former South African president Nelson Mandela's eldest daughter Maki to serve on the panel of judges. Among those countries not represented in Sanya were North Korea and Myanmar. Taiwan also did not have a contestant here, as Beijing considers Taiwan part of its territory.

Contestants from 106 countries and regions competed at the final

of the 57th Miss World Competition in Sanya on Saturday.

 

 

The 23 year old Zhang Zi Lin beat 
106 other contestants from all around the globe.
The Miss World Organisation used Saturday's 57th contest to spread the
message about HIV/AIDS as it coincides with World AIDS Day.

The TV spectacular was hosted by top Chinese TV presenter Angela Chow, presenting Miss World for the fifth year in succession, alongside co-host Fernando Allende, who is one of Latin America's biggest stars and was making his Miss World debut.

The show told the story of the contestants' stay in the tropical paradise of Sanya, with many clips of their activities and sightseeing, as well as their exciting trip to Beijing where they recorded the Olympic Torch Relay Anthem, visited the Great Wall and helped the Red Cross raise over US$5.5m to build new healthcare centres across China.

It also featured a stunning performance by international pop star Duncan James, formerly with the boy band Blue, singing 'All I care about is love' from the hit musical Chicago, and spectacular dancing and acrobatics from some of China's most talented dance troupes.

One of the highlights came when Mandla Mandela, grandson of Nelson Mandela, introduced his grandfather's televised message for World Aids Day.  This was followed by a magical moment, when the children from the Mandelas' home town in South Africa joined with children from a local Hainan school and all 106 contestants to sing the World Aids Day song.

Miss World – The Final is the World's largest live annual TV event with global viewing figures topping two billion across 174 countries.
