From my Math Milestones:

1. Count the fingers on your two hands. Did you learn how many fingers are there? Did you learn this fact by counting? Can we say that COUNTING is a tool for learning?
The word MATHEMATICS comes from a Greek word, mathema, which means, "Things learned."
Mathematics may be defined as "TOOLS FOR LEARNING."
2. In counting, one follows a precise sequence—ONE, TWO, THREE, FOUR, FIVE, and so on. Throughout mathematics we approach learning in a systematic manner. We solve problems by using systematic thinking, and not just by memory.
The purpose of Mathematics is "TO DEVELOP SYSTEMATIC THINKING."

Mathematics is an experience. Its symbols, patterns and relationships are aesthetically captivating. We focus on world languages, however, math is the language of eternity. If students master the language of math, they will indeed discover the founatain of youth.

I was thinking about these things this morning and I am curious about
what you people feel about these questions.
What is the defintion of mathematics?
What is the beauty of mathematics?
How do you make students interested in mathematics? (through the its
applications, beauty... ...?)
I feel that mathematics is like a tree which is deeply rooted in the
world. It has two main branches which are numbers and shapes. In
addition, it constantly branches out into new areas as time passes.
Every branch and leaf is different and unique in its own way.
