hi,
I don't know why you change the (+) to (x)?
the expression is :
26 14 : 2 x 3 + 4² = ?
the colon here means division.
you can rewrite the expression as :
26 14 / 2 x 3 + 4² = ?

26 - 112 == -86If the colon means division, that would make a first for me...as far as I can remember.I recall seeing a colon used in ratios but, ratios are not usually used in order of operation problems. Thus, the use of a colon in this kind of a problem would present as a kind of an anomaly.
If it represents a ratio in the problem, I think that it needs to be left in ratio form.26 - 14 : 2 x 16
12 : 32 or 3 : 8.

Subject: [Math4u] 26 â" 14 : 2 x 3 + 4² = ?Please Excuse My Dear Aunt Sally26 â" 14 : 2 x 3 + 4² = ?It was surprising that so many people, even those who thought they were math persons, answered this question incorrectly; 90% of them gave the wrong answer.
how to organize your operations !
What do the words Please Excuse My Dear Aunt Sally refer to?This is an acronym: use it to help you retain the order of operations. The words stand for :Parenthesis, Exponents, Multiply, Divide, Add, SubtractIn Mathematics, when there is more than one operation involved, you must use the correct order of operations.Expressions involving one operation12 + 5 = 17 here you have only one operation (+)35 x 3 = 105 here you have only one operation(x)what about if you have two operations? for example :14 +5 x 10 =?are you going to solve it as : 14 + 5 =19 and then multiply 19x10 =190?orare you going to solve it as : 5 x 10 =50 and then add 14 +50 = 64 ?Expressions involving two operations14 + 5 x 10 =?Following the acronym Please Excuse My Dear Aunt Sallyor(PEMDAS) the expression 14 + 5 X 10 has two operationsaddition and multiplication right? and in the acronym M(in My)which refers to multiplication comes before A(in Aunt)which refers to addition.so 14+5 x10 = 64(multiply before add)Expressions involving more than two operations7 x 5 + 8/8 â"12 x 2 =?(7x5=35 and 8/8 =1 and 12x2=24)35 + 1â"24 =12Atadri Bodor
