You are spreading confusion to the less sophisticated readers of this
group, and frustration to those of us who are more advanced. Below,
you tell rolandjo that he is correct to perform the multiplication to
the right before the division to the left, which is wrong. On your web
site, you have the following problem in which you perform the division
before the multiplication, which is correct.
20-12/2x3+4^2 here "x" means multiply (The correct answer is 18)
Can you explain this discrepancy?
Multiplication and division have the same priority and are performed
from left to right.
As others have said and as I tell my college students, mathematics is
spoken in the same language all over the world. You cannot just make
up your own rules and notation.
If you intend for the "/" below to be a vinculum, you can't just say
it. If you are writing the entire expression on one line in ASCII
text, you must specify the grouping that would be imposed by the
vinculum by using parentheses .
